Payroll companies in Switzerland fall broadly into four categories: modern platform providers with their own service team, classic accounting firms with payroll mandates, software vendors with accounting-firm partners and Big-4 advisory houses. They differ not only in price, but fundamentally in operational depth, response speed and the question of how much you still need to know yourself.
We are a payroll company in Switzerland ourselves, so our view is not neutral — but we try to describe the other categories fairly. Here is an honest assessment of who fits when.
What matters in a payroll company
Six criteria determine whether the partnership works in the long run:
- CLA depth and Swiss specialists. Who has operational command of L-GAV hospitality, LMV construction, the staffing CLA and cantonal special rules — not just an awareness that they exist.
- Response speed. A sick note came in yesterday: has a UVG/KTG claim already gone out today? Or does a week pass?
- Transparency and live status. Can you see the status any time in a dashboard, or do you wait for an email from your accounting firm?
- Self-service option. Can you trigger small changes like address updates or workload adjustments yourself, or does everything have to go through the provider?
- Pricing model. Predictable per employee/month, or an hourly rate with surprises at month-end?
- Contractual flexibility. Cancellable monthly or a multi-year lock-in? What happens to your data when you leave?
payrollnow — the modern payroll company
payrollnow is the only Swiss payroll company that offers both a standalone cloud platform and an operational Swiss service team in a single solution. You choose how much you do yourself — and you can switch at any time.
USP 1 — event-based, no payroll expertise required
This is the most important architectural difference from every other payroll company. With classic accounting firms and software vendors you have to know what to do when someone is hired, which withholding-tax special cases apply to a weekly resident, and what happens to the BVG salary when a workload changes.
At payrollnow we flip that around: you report what happened — a hire, illness, bonus, departure. The system automatically generates every required task — AHV registration, BVG, withholding-tax tariff, pro-rata salary, BFS statistics, salary-certificate update. Plausibility checks and impact notices appear before you approve.
Even if you choose the affordable platform tier (CHF 12 / employee / month), you don't need to be a payroll specialist. The system tells you what to do for each event. With Bexio, SwissSalary and Abacus you have to know it yourself — otherwise compliance gaps open up.
USP 2 — Swiss payroll specialists for every CLA
Our service team isn't in Ukraine or India, but in Switzerland — and has operational command of every important collective labour agreement.
- L-GAV hospitality: tips vs. tronc, shift premiums, 13th month salary pro rata for seasonal workers
- LMV construction: wage classes V/Q/A/B/C × red/blue/green zones, bad-weather compensation, travel allowance
- Staffing CLA: daily settlements, multiple withholding-tax employments per employee, permit management B/L/G/Ci
- Industry CBAs: hairdressing, painting, joinery, tiling and all important cantonal agreements
When needed, our specialists take over the operational handling — from the first withholding-tax registration to the AHV/SUVA review. You can do it yourself or delegate it to us, depending on the tier you choose.
USP 3 — software OR outsourcing in one platform
We are the only payroll company in Switzerland that offers both in a single solution. Bexio, SwissSalary and Abacus are pure software. Classic accounting firms are pure service. Big-4 are enterprise service. At payrollnow you choose:
Switching between self-service and outsourcing is possible at any time, with no data migration or change of platform. You keep your login, data and employee app — only the service team is added or removed.
USP 4 — employee app with AI chat included
Native iOS/Android app for your employees — included in both tiers, unlimited logins, no add-on surcharge. Payslips, salary certificates, leave requests, expenses and address changes are handled directly in the app. The AI chat answers questions like "How much leave do I have left?" or "When is my salary certificate coming?" in seconds — instead of a call to HR.
With classic accounting firms, employees receive their payslip by email or post. With Bexio, SwissSalary and Abacus an employee app is either a separate paid module or missing entirely.
Classic accounting firms as a payroll company
Swiss SMEs have been outsourcing payroll to accounting firms for decades — from small practices with 5 mandates to mid-sized firms with 200+ payroll mandates. Their strength: deep Swiss domain experience, a personal relationship, regional roots.
Pricing range: flat-fee models typically CHF 30–80 per employee per month. Hourly-rate mandates CHF 120–180/h.
Where accounting firms work as a payroll company:
- You already have an accounting firm you trust for bookkeeping and taxes.
- You want a fixed Swiss point of contact with a regional connection.
- Your payroll structure is manageable (1–20 employees, no complex CLAs).
- You can do without modern tools (live dashboard, employee app, real-time processing).
Where it gets tight:
- Monthly-run logic. Corrections are usually only booked in the following month. Anyone who needs adjustments mid-month (bonus, expense reimbursement) waits.
- Black box. You can only learn the status by emailing to ask. You don't know whether the withholding-tax registration has gone out until you check.
- Hourly-rate surprises. Every query, special case and correction costs extra. Hard to budget.
- No employee app. Your employees call HR, write emails and wait for answers.
- Scaling ceiling. From around 30–50 employees the hourly rate quickly becomes more expensive than a platform model.
Software vendors with a service partner
Bexio Payroll, SwissSalary 365 and Abacus Payroll aren't payroll companies in the strict sense — they are software vendors. But if you need operational service, you have to insert an accounting-firm partner in between who works with that particular software.
In practice it works like this:
- Bexio + accounting firm: you use Bexio Payroll as your software and give your accounting firm read or write access. Bexio costs from CHF 7/month for 1 employee, the accounting firm on top by the hour or flat fee.
- SwissSalary + implementation partner: SwissSalary runs on Microsoft Business Central. Implementation and operational service typically come from a certified Microsoft Dynamics partner.
- Abacus + payroll specialist: Abacus is often set up directly or via an Abacus implementation partner. The operational payroll work is frequently handled by a specialised accounting firm within the Abacus network.
We covered the strengths and weaknesses in our detailed comparison of software vendors — see Best payroll software Switzerland 2026 compared.
Shared weakness as a payroll-company construct: you have two contractual partners instead of one. When something goes wrong, it's not always clear who is responsible — the software or the accounting firm. At payrollnow both come from a single source.
Big-4 and enterprise outsourcing
For large corporates and listed companies, the Big-4 (KPMG, PwC, EY, Deloitte) and specialised outsourcing houses like BDO, Mazars or ADP are the typical payroll companies. They deliver enterprise-level compliance, international reach and deep legal advice.
Pricing: strictly quote-based. Typically much more expensive than SME solutions — often CHF 80–200+ per employee per month, plus significant setup costs.
Where Big-4 work as a payroll company:
- Multinational corporates with 500+ employees across several countries.
- Listed companies with special reporting requirements (IFRS, US GAAP).
- Complex setups with expats, cross-border work and profit-share models.
- Audit-sensitive industries where the "Big-4 stamp" carries value.
Where it doesn't fit: for SMEs up to 250 employees, Big-4 are usually heavily over-dimensioned and overpriced.
Which payroll company fits whom?
An honest use-case differentiation:
- 1–5 employees, simple structure, already a Bexio customer: Bexio Payroll in-house + optional accounting-firm support for year-end. Cheap and solid.
- 5–20 employees, an existing local accounting-firm relationship, simple payroll structure: a classic accounting firm is a valid choice, especially if your bookkeeping already runs there.
- 10–250 employees, SME or Mittelstand, a modern solution wanted, CLA complexity: payrollnow is the pitch. Especially when:
- You don't want to end up in an ERP lock-in.
- You want to choose flexibly between self-service and outsourcing.
- You want an employee app with AI chat as standard.
- You need to cover L-GAV, LMV or the staffing CLA operationally.
- You want transparent pricing per employee/month instead of an hourly rate.
- 500+ employees, listed, international: Big-4 or ADP. Here institutional depth matters more than pricing.
If you currently work with a classic accounting firm at CHF 50–80/employee/month or more and have from 10–15 employees, it's worth honestly running the numbers on switching to payrollnow. At CHF 25 per employee/month for complete payroll outsourcing — including the platform, Swiss specialists and the employee app — the margin is usually substantial.
CLA edge cases: where the provider really counts
Three typical cases where the choice of payroll company makes the biggest difference:
Daily settlements instead of a monthly run, multiple withholding-tax employments per employee, cantonal multi-employment extrapolation, permit management B/L/G/Ci. Almost impossible to run without specialists — and software vendors without industry depth regularly fail here.
Recommendation: payrollnow Outsourcing tier or a specialised industry accounting firm.
Wage classes V/Q/A/B/C × red/blue/green zones, bad-weather compensation, travel allowance, piece-rate wages. Annual wage adjustments, early-retirement FAR contributions. Complex mixed-wage calculations.
Recommendation: payrollnow Outsourcing or a construction-specialised accounting firm with SORBA experience.
Tip treatment (AHV-liable yes/no), tronc distribution, shift premiums by day/night/weekend, seasonal workers with 13th month salary pro rata. Annual minimum-wage updates.
Recommendation: payrollnow Outsourcing (especially for a multi-site setup) or a hospitality-specialised accounting firm with a Mirus/Lightspeed connection.
