Four vendors dominate the Swiss payroll software market in 2026: payrollnow, Bexio Payroll, SwissSalary 365 and Abacus payroll. They differ not only in price, but fundamentally in architecture, lock-in risk and the depth of their Swiss industry knowledge.
We run a Swiss payroll platform ourselves and see every day which setups work at which company size — and which lead to compliance gaps or unexpected costs. Here's an honest assessment of the four main vendors, with one caveat: we're a market participant ourselves and our view is not neutral. That said, we try to describe the vendors fairly.
What really matters in payroll software in Switzerland
Eight criteria decide whether payroll software works in the long run:
- Swissdec compliance. Version 5.3 is currently the latest (certified from mid-2026). 5.1 and 5.0 are still in use, and all of them cover the key ELM notifications.
- Cantonal depth. 26 cantons, each with its own withholding-tax tariffs, family allowance (FamZ) rates and, in some cases, special rules (half-family tariff, cross-border commuters, weekly residents).
- Industry specifics and CLAs. L-GAV hospitality, LMV construction, staffing CLA — each with its own minimum wages, premiums and permit mechanisms.
- Modernity of the engine. Real-time calculation on every input vs. the classic monthly run with correction loops.
- Employee self-service. Native app vs. web portal vs. emailing the payslip. As teams grow, this determines HR workload.
- Integrations. Accounting, HR tools, time tracking, banking, insurers — bidirectional and without CSV back-and-forth.
- Pricing model. Per employee/month vs. bundles vs. quote-based. Setup costs transparent or hidden.
- Contractual flexibility. Monthly cancellable or annual contract. Data export on exit.
payrollnow platform — what we do differently
payrollnow is the newest solution in this comparison and deliberately positions itself differently. The key architectural difference: payrollnow is event-based, not monthly-run-based. Bexio, SwissSalary and Abacus all follow the classic monthly-run logic — the user has to know which steps are required for which case and carry them out actively. At payrollnow we flip that around: you report what happened, and the system automatically generates every required task and walks you through each step.
You report an event — a hire, sick leave, bonus, workload change, termination. The system automatically generates every necessary task — AHV registration, BVG provider, withholding-tax tariff, pro-rata calculation, BFS statistics, salary-certificate update. With plausibility checks and warnings about the impact before you approve. With the other vendors you have to know which steps are needed yourself — payrollnow takes that off your plate.
You don't need specialist payroll knowledge — not even in the self-service tier
That's the direct consequence of the event-based architecture. Classic payroll software assumes the user knows: What needs to happen when someone is hired? Which withholding-tax special cases apply to a weekly resident? What happens to the BVG salary when the workload changes? What deadlines apply to the EO settlement? With Bexio, SwissSalary and Abacus you get very good calculation software — but you have to know the payroll obligations yourself and work through them actively. The system helps you calculate, not know what needs to be done.
At payrollnow this domain logic is built into the engine. You report "Maria starts on 1 August at 60% with residence in Frauenfeld" — the platform generates seven tasks (AHV, BVG, UVG, withholding tax with the correct tariff for Thurgau, pro-rata salary, family allowance check, dry-run preview), checks plausibility and walks you through each step. This applies to the CHF 12 platform tier too — not just outsourcing. Anyone who has used payroll software before will feel at home immediately. Anyone who hasn't will still manage.
Even if you choose the affordable self-service tier (CHF 12 / employee / month), you don't have to be a payroll specialist. The system tells you what to do for each event — with Bexio, SwissSalary and Abacus you have to know this on your own, otherwise compliance gaps or corrections in the following month arise.
Software or service — in one platform
With payrollnow you choose how much you do yourself — and can switch at any time. CHF 12 per employee/month for the self-service platform, CHF 25 per employee/month for complete payroll outsourcing with our team of Swiss payroll specialists. Bexio, SwissSalary and Abacus offer software only — outsourcing you have to organise separately through an accounting firm.
Further points of differentiation
- Swiss payroll specialists for every CLA. Our service team knows L-GAV hospitality (tips, shift premiums), LMV construction (wage classes, bad weather), staffing CLA (daily settlements, withholding-tax special cases), the hairdressing CLA, the painting CLA and all the important cantonal CBAs.
- Real-time calculation. A direct result of the event-based architecture: payroll recalculates on every input. Retroactive recalculations across several months are free and instantly visible, and corrections happen within the same period.
- Employee app with AI chat included. Native iOS/Android app where payslips, holidays, expenses and requests are handled. The AI chat answers questions like "How many holidays do I have left?" in seconds, instead of tying up HR on the phone. With every other vendor this is a separate add-on or missing entirely.
- No ERP lock-in. payrollnow connects with Bexio, Abacus, SAP, SwissSalary FIBU, Banana, Klara — as source and sink. We don't want to replace your accounting, we want to connect to it.
- Transparent pricing. CHF 12 or CHF 25 per employee/month. No bundles, no minimum flat fees, no hidden modules. Setup CHF 1'500–5'000 depending on scope, cancellable monthly.
- Switch option. If you start with the self-service platform and later realise you want operational support: switch to CHF 25 without data migration, without changing platforms. You keep your login, data and employee app — only the service team is added.
Swissdec compliance runs via a partner on ELM 5.1 — payrollnow is not directly certified. That's relevant to know.
Bexio Payroll
Bexio is the most established Swiss SME suite and offers payroll as a module within the Bexio ecosystem. Certified to Swissdec 5.3 (the latest version as of 2026) — a clear bonus for compliance.
Pricing (based on public information, June 2026):
- Advanced: CHF 7/mo for 1 employee, CHF 25/mo for up to 5 employees.
- Optima: CHF 25/mo for up to 5 employees.
- Ultimate: 25 monthly payslips included, expandable up to 250 on request.
Strengths:
- Very compact solution for micro SMEs with 1–5 employees.
- For small teams considerably cheaper than payrollnow.
- Deep integration into Bexio accounting, posting to the general ledger in one step.
- EMA notifications (entry, change, exit) directly to AHV, FAK, BVG.
- Swissdec 5.3 is the most current version on the market.
Where it gets tight:
- Only makes sense within the Bexio universe — anyone running accounting on Abacus or SAP has a harder time.
- No native employee app in the SME package; employees receive their payslip by email.
- Growth beyond 25 employees means switching to the more expensive Ultimate package.
- Complex CLA constellations (e.g. staffing, simultaneous L-GAV mandates) are not the primary use case.
- If you need operational outsourcing, you have to bring an accounting firm in between.
SwissSalary 365
SwissSalary isn't a standalone tool but a module for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. That makes the comparison tricky: you're not just paying the SwissSalary price, but also the Business Central licences underneath.
Pricing (public SaaS cloud tariffs):
- SwissSalary 365 Basis: CHF 39/month.
- SwissSalary 365 Plus: CHF 74/month.
- Plus: the Business Central subscription cost per user (typically CHF 70+/user/mo for Essentials).
Strengths:
- Deep integration with Microsoft Office 365 (Teams, Excel, Word, OneDrive).
- Microsoft Copilot integrated directly for payroll admin queries.
- Swissdec 5.0 certified plus, ELM 5.0.
- 10+ standardised financial-accounting (FIBU) export interfaces (Dynamics, Abacus, SAP, Infoniqa, JD Edwards).
- SwissSalary Direct as an employee portal (separate add-on).
- Plus version: KLE claim notifications, ALV certificates, bad-weather/short-time-work automation.
Where it gets tight:
- Only makes sense if the company already works in the Microsoft world — or is willing to move there.
- Real total cost is higher than the CHF 39/74 sticker price (Business Central licences on top).
- The SwissSalary Direct employee portal is an add-on, not in the base price.
- The Copilot AI is for HR/admin users, not for employees themselves.
- Operational outsourcing again via a separate accounting firm.
Abacus payroll
Abacus has been the market leader for Swiss ERP solutions for over 35 years. Payroll is a module within the overall Abacus solution alongside HR, time tracking and project management. More than 1.5 million payslips per month are produced with Abacus — by far the largest installed base.
Pricing: quote-based. Abacus doesn't publish a public tariff — terms are negotiated in a direct sales conversation and depend on the client setup, module selection and industry complexity. Real-world experience: typically in the upper mid-market segment.
Strengths:
- Market leadership and deep Swiss domain knowledge. Over 35 years of experience with all CLAs and cantonal specifics.
- Salary certificate CH + FL (Liechtenstein) — often not standard with the other solutions.
- The employee portal is included as standard and marketed as a cost advantage.
- Integrated into a full ERP solution — time, HR, projects, accounting in the same system.
- Swissdec 5.0 certified.
- Foreign currencies, retroactive recalculations, complex cost-centre allocation.
Where it gets tight:
- Tends to be aimed at larger SMEs and the Mittelstand — usually oversized for 1–10 employees.
- Lock-in to the Abacus ERP universe. Anyone who really only needs payroll buys a lot of unused ERP functionality along with it.
- Implementation typically takes several months, with an implementation partner.
- Pricing isn't transparent — hard to plan for.
- The employee portal is web-based, no native mobile app with AI chat.
CLA complexity: where specialist knowledge makes the difference
A central difference between tool-only vendors and payrollnow is industry depth. Swiss SMEs operate under countless collective labour agreements (CLAs), each with its own calculation rules. Here's a selection of the most common complications:
L-GAV hospitality: treatment of tips (what is subject to AHV, what is tronc), pro-rata 13th month salary for seasonal workers, shift premiums by day/night/weekend, annual minimum-wage updates.
LMV construction: wage classes V/Q/A/B/C × red/blue/green zones, bad-weather compensation, weather-related downtime, travel allowance, piece-rate wages, early retirement.
Staffing CLA: daily settlements instead of a monthly run, multiple withholding-tax employments per employee, cantonal multi-employer projection, permit management (B/L/G/Ci).
Hairdressing, painting, joinery CLAs: each with its own wage classes, professional contributions and regional minimum wages.
Software-only tools can implement the rules, but they can't decide for you whether a specific case is handled correctly. That's where payrollnow outsourcing comes in: our Swiss service team knows the CLAs and takes over the operational handling — from the initial withholding-tax registration to the AHV/SUVA audit.
Which payroll software fits whom?
An honest assessment:
- Micro SMEs with 1–5 employees, simple structure, Bexio-inclined: Bexio Payroll is cheap, quick to set up and well integrated. If you have little complexity, it serves you solidly.
- Microsoft shops with Business Central or Dynamics 365: SwissSalary 365 is the natural choice, because the integration comes free and the setup with Business Central is seamless.
- Mittelstand with a complex ERP world, multiple sites, project accounting: Abacus is the market leader with the deepest Swiss domain experience. Hard to beat for large setups, but priced accordingly.
- SMEs of any size that want a modern, neutral payroll solution — with an optional service team: payrollnow. Especially a fit when:
- You don't want to end up in an ERP lock-in.
- You want an employee app with AI chat as standard, not as an add-on.
- You operate in industries with complex CLAs (construction, hospitality, staffing).
- You want to keep the option of fully outsourcing later open.
- You want transparent per-employee/month pricing.
If you have 10–15 employees and up and want a modern, scalable setup while keeping the option of operational outsourcing open, you should take a look at payrollnow. CHF 12 per employee/month is competitive with software-only solutions, and the switch path to CHF 25 with a service team is unique in the Swiss market. Open live pricing calculator →
